Open metal fencing is the signature fence of Scottsdale. It lets a yard keep its view of the McDowells, Camelback or a golf fairway, it meets pool barrier spacing when built for it, and it is what most associations specify wherever a wall would block the desert. You see it set on top of low block walls all over the city.
Steel is the stronger and more common of the two. Most of what people here call wrought iron is welded tubular steel with a powder-coated finish. It can be built on site to follow a slope or fit between boulders. Aluminum is lighter, never rusts and suits pool decks and places where sprinklers or misters wet the fence every day. Both get hot to the touch in July, like any metal.
Finish and footing decide how long it lasts. We use powder coat over galvanized or primed steel, and we keep the bottom rail off the soil so irrigation water does not sit on it. For a pool, we build the picket spacing, height and gate hardware to the barrier rules that apply to your address.
Aluminum & ornamental steel in Scottsdale: common questions
What is view fence?
It is open picket fencing, usually steel, used where a solid wall would block a view. Many Scottsdale communities require it along golf courses, washes and open desert.
Will steel fencing rust in the desert?
Dry air helps, but sprinklers and drip lines cause rust at the base of posts and at welds. A good powder coat and keeping water off the fence prevent most of it.
Can ornamental fence go on top of my block wall?
Often, yes. The combined height still has to meet the city limit, and the wall has to be sound enough to take the anchors.
