Monsoon Damaged Fence in Scottsdale: What to Do and Who Pays

What to do when a monsoon storm, dust storm or fallen tree damages your fence in Scottsdale: fast repair, insurance, neighbor trees and temporary fixes.

When a storm took your fence down, photograph the fence and whatever struck it before you move anything. After that, phone your insurer and a fence company. Arizona's monsoon season is counted from June 15 to September 30. Its storms push out sudden walls of wind and dust that can flatten a solid panel or drop a palo verde across a gate.

Half my fence blew down. Who can fix it fast and what will it cost?

Text us a picture with an approximate length and we will give a first estimate of scope. A section that blew down along with its posts is a major repair, $900 to $2,500 in the national 2026 figures. A single storm cell can damage hundreds of yards in one evening, and every company's calendar fills fast. The sooner you call, the sooner the date.

My dogs are in the yard and the fence is open to the road. What can be done right away?

A temporary closure can go up first. Posts that survived are braced and a panel is fastened across the gap until the permanent repair is scheduled. Say at the start of the call that dogs are in the yard or that a pool is now exposed. Those visits are placed ahead of ordinary work.

Is there an extra charge for emergency or weekend fence repair?

Ask when you call, because companies differ. Some charge more outside normal hours and some do not work them. The lower-cost path is normally to secure the opening right away and book the real repair for a regular weekday.

Does homeowners insurance cover a fence knocked down by a storm or a tree?

It may. Policies often treat a fence as an other structure on the property, but whether you are paid depends on what caused the loss, the size of your deductible and the wording. A repair smaller than the deductible is not worth a claim. Your agent or insurer can tell you. We write the estimate you will need.

My neighbor's tree fell on my fence. Whose insurance pays?

Usually yours, for your own fence, even though the tree was theirs. That can change if the neighbor had notice that the tree was dead or unsafe and did nothing. Put the question to your insurer. If the damaged structure is a wall both lots share, see our page on shared fences in Arizona.

The insurer offered much less than the repair quote because the fence is old. Now what?

Request the figures behind the offer in writing. Many policies pay what an aged fence was worth, less depreciation, not what a new one costs. Send back an itemized estimate. If a gap remains, one practical choice is to fix only what the storm broke.

The storm knocked the fence down and my neighbor says it is mine. Who pays?

First establish whose land the fence or wall stood on. Arizona has no general statute dividing the cost of a boundary fence between neighbors, so the answer comes from ownership, from anything the two of you signed and from HOA documents. Where the line is uncertain, hire an Arizona registered land surveyor. A fence company cannot settle a boundary. Our shared fence page goes further.
